Over the last ten years I've read, researched, studied and experienced many forms of poly or fluid relationships. In discussions the word *polyamory* would confuse people as they imagined zealot polygamists from news TV stories with multiple 14 year old brides. There were so many bad ideas and misconceptions out there! Consciousness for BIG LOVE is starting to emerge, evolving mostly through our own fluidity and availability to discuss the details of how to build bonds that feel true and authentic to who we are. While looking to articulate healthy bonded relationships I wrote a script and stories about a fluid foursome+ that entangled in all of the ways that felt more familiar to me: the dance floor, social networks and work/play. In conversation we processed more and started a nonprofit creative community that allowed us to look at the bonding as an art form.
I believe that conscious bonding, dating & marriage can radically empower all of us to pursue our highest potential. When we feel free to express ourselves in relationship we are creating something LARGER THAN OURSELVES. It is these invisible systems of love that will sustain us throughout our lives -- this network we weave together is bigger than who we choose to date or kiss or allow into our lives.
AMORATION is a word rarely used, uncommon and unknown in most circles.....sad considering that the English language is completely lacking in good nomenclature for LOVE. Do we have other words in our vocabulary for THE BIGGEST UNIVERSAL LOVE THAT ENVELOPS ALL OF US? What do we call this power we have to create together?
I call it AMO. The root of love itself, the space we open within us to let the world inside. Sharing AMO, not AMMO gun shots but AMO LOVE BOMBS every time we walk, talk, eat, play. Subtle, simple, direct.....not perfect, but it's my practice, the only thing that has given me a centered approach to loving the worlds around me in real and tangible ways. Giving that AMO demonstrates truth, appreciation, acceptance, understanding and embracing that continues to grow on and on....
The fluid relationships tribe is a beautiful thing and I wanted to hear more of your vocabulary for this experience. Words like COMPERSION make perfect sense to me but there's also something else, something larger created in this open space. What do you call it?

Re: Amoration
Mon, January 1, 2007 - 2:24 PMMaybe having new words for some of these ideas could help, since so much of this just doesn't fit the "standard" ways of talking about love. Mostly the only "new" word I use in this context is compersion, but there are some general statements I often find myself making, such as:
"It's about who, not how many," meaning that I'm much more focused on who is special to me and why, rather than how many people are special to me.
"It's a space, not a line," meaning I don't put relationships on scales on which some are "primary" and others are "secondary." Instead, I think of all the relationships I have as being in a sort of life-space.
"Every communication is a relationship." This seems fairly simple to me. It's always baffled me how, in standard dating-speak, only some relationships are even considered to be relationships in the first place. To me, communicating _is_ relating, and I always kind of thought a relationship is about...well, relating.
Are there any new words that could condense these ideas and make them easier to express?
Happy New Year, everyone.
Peace,

Not GET MINE.....GROW OURS
Tue, January 2, 2007 - 7:08 PMA friend of mine gave me the GROW OURS meme on a trip last month; it stuck with me as a great way to encourage the flows and patterns I want in my life. The collaborative spirit, people who bring great joy and love to the table with everything they do.....it's all connected whether natural, creative, sensual, educational, inspirational. I keep an open circle of friends and partners in business, art, worldbuilding and play that extends far beyond most typical definitions of relationships. My marriage is loving, solid and free from major frustration. This has only worked because I spent years exploring and looking for that language and understanding that many people here have also been seeking.
What do you call your *significant friends* or brightest stars who share this road with us?

Re: Not GET MINE.....GROW OURS
Wed, January 3, 2007 - 9:22 AMI'm actually surprised I hadn't seen more fluid-relationship-oriented memes around, before I found this tribe. I've seen some references to non-hierarchical polyamory, but not much in detail other than a definition.
"What do you call your 'significant friends' or brightest stars who share this road with us?"
I don't have a word for the individual people, but I generally think of a social environment that fosters these fluid, non-hierarchical connections as being Home (with a capital H, to distinguish it from small-h "home," i.e. my place of residence).
Peace,

Re: Not GET MINE.....GROW OURS
Wed, January 3, 2007 - 12:17 PMThat makes sense Andy....when I meet someone that I partner with in most any way (work/play) I know them right away....they have a special glow to them and they feel like HOME. That's a great way to describe that bond created. -

Re: Not GET MINE.....GROW OURS
Wed, January 3, 2007 - 12:36 PMI wasn't sure I really had any nontraditional (and confusing) vocabulary for myself. Although I have used Home repeatedly to describe how I feel about my partner, and also about some of our friends. It definitely resonates with me.I think that it describes the group of people where you can truly be yourself, without feeling as though you have to wear a mask, being free to love and express and relate on a more intimate level. -

Re: Not GET MINE.....GROW OURS
Wed, January 3, 2007 - 12:48 PM"Home." I like it, too. Usin' it!
Last summer, a partner of mine and I took to calling each other (and similarly situated folks) "Costars." -

Re: Not GET MINE.....GROW OURS
Wed, January 3, 2007 - 6:18 PMI commonly refer to my husband as my ally.
There has always been something peculiarly familiar about him, from the day we met, like we already knew each other. -

Re: Not GET MINE.....GROW OURS
Thu, January 4, 2007 - 5:28 AMI remember reading a sci-fi story set in a future where people called each other "allies." I think it was Gold Coast, by Kim Stanley Robinson, but not sure...It's been a long time since I read it, but ne thing I remember from it is that the relationships the characters had seemed very fluid, if I'm thinking of the same book.
I like "Costars" too--What a great metaphor, whether in a theatrical or astronomical context, with each one shining brightly.
Peace,
--Andy

Re: Not GET MINE.....GROW OURS
Fri, January 5, 2007 - 10:48 AMShan, I call mine "handsome" for that same feeling he evokes.....
Partners beyond fill out our inner circle of co-conspirators.....I like the idea of bringing allies together.
